1. cheese and crackers
keep it simple or get fancy, but try to stick with softer cheeses like French Brie that perform well in beach weather. they get softer and more spreadable, whereas the cheddars and other hard cheeses will just get soft, oily, and unappealing.
2. charcuterie and cheese
turkey, pork loin, salmon, and other house smoked meats are easy to pack. this includes cheeses such as gouda, cheddar, point reyes blue, humboldt fog, and brie also. they’re delicious cold or room temperature and can give you a quick shot of protein between boogie boarding sessions.
3. deli sandwiches
sure, you could slather some peanut butter between a couple of pieces of bread and take it to the beach to stave off your hunger. but if you want to take it up a notch, grab some deluxe deli sandwiches from bfd. we make ‘em fat and delectable. grab one or two sandwiches to go for your beach picnic or call us the day before and we’ll make an assortment tray for your whole crew.
4. skewers
skewers make perfect beach snacks. they’re easily assembled and packed the day before, easy to eat with one hand, and super versatile. try meat and roasted vegetables, tomato and mozzarella, or pineapple and strawberry.
5. salads
although many people consider salads to be a side dish, we think they make a perfectly portable main meal. try our sesame chicken salad, duck cranberry salad, or poached salmon salad the next time you’re heading for the beach. we’ll pack it up for you and even give you a fork to eat it with.
6. pesto orzo
whether you’re a guest at someone else’s beach bash or just looking for a side dish to go with your main meal, pesto orzo is a crowd pleaser. you can make your own, or give us a call ahead of time and we’ll make it for you. $8 for a quart (feeds 4-6) or $32 for a pan (feeds 16-24 people).
7. pasta salad
to fancify an everyday picnic dish, try this recipe for sundried tomato pasta salad. it’s delicious and, because it’s mayo-free, it also works great at the beach.
8. brownies
salads and meats are great and all, but you gotta take dessert to the beach, too. everyone loves brownies. cut them up into small, easily packable, easily shareable squares, and you’re good to go. skip the frosting, though; it’ll just get messy in the heat.
9. cookies
as the temperature rises and high season approaches, you may become less and less inclined to bake anything at home. in that case, we’ve got you covered. our cookies are big and delicious, and we’ll give you a dozen for $15. choose from chocolate chip, oatmeal rum raisin, coconut macaroon, and double chocolate pistachio with salt.
10. beer!
ok, so beer is not food, but we’re pretty sure it’s a requirement at any beach picnic. come fill your cooler with craft beer to go at bfd before your next day at the beach.
don’t worry, bfd in San Diego will feed you!
