whatever your workday lunch routine—“the usual” from the corner deli, brown-bagging it, or drive-thru you’ll regret by 3pm—it’s always a bonus when a project, meeting, or celebration means the boss is springing for everyone’s meal.
welcome to autumn, where official seasonal flavors are typically limited to pumpkin spice, pumpkin spice, and…you guessed it, pumpkin spice. at big front door, we’re all about capturing the essence of seasonal flavors in our fresh deli sandwiches, and our imagination is unlimited. check out these past seasonal specialties that sometimes make a reappearance. but remember, nothing’s guaranteed. you gotta get our delectable seasonal sandwiches while you can.
a long delicious road led sheep riley from his east coast childhood to big front door. in an interview with fm 94/9’s lick the plate radio show, sheep detailed that journey, bite-by-bite. read on to find out how this jersey kid landed in san diego, where he now owns a rad deli restaurant in university heights.
some things just go together. macaroni and cheese. beyoncé and jay z. avocado and toast. bacon and eggs. all of them are pretty great on their own. but when they join forces, they’re full-on mind-blowing.
that’s exactly how we feel about deli sandwiches and craft beer. at bfd, we believe there’s no better way to wash down a spicy cuban or pulled pork sandwich than with a cold, frosty ale from a local brewery.
there’s nothing like cruising through town on a bicycle. you get fresh air, exercise, and an up-close-and-personal look at daily life on the beautiful streets of san diego in a way that just doesn’t happen when you’re sealed up in a car.
but of course, when you’re out there soaking up the san diego sun on your beach cruiser, city bike, road bike or whatnot, you’ll need to fuel up somewhere, right?
when you run a deli restaurant in a busy neighborhood like university heights, you don’t have a ton of time to reflect. but every now and again, something happens that causes you to stop and take a look around.
for us at bfd, it was our four-year anniversary that made us go, “has it really been four years already? it feels more like two!”
that got us thinking about how much we love it in university heights, how grateful we are to be an institution in the neighborhood, and how many great things have happened in four quick years.
take a look below at our top four moments in bfd history (and then stick around for a bonus top 4 list of things you may not know about us.)
san diego is a pretty chill town. we like to party and get cray every now and again, but for the most part, we keep it mellow. until pride weekend, that is.
for three days every july, we get rowdy and a little bit wild during the san diego lgbt pride festival. this year will be no different. here’s what we’re most looking forward to:
san diego isn’t exactly a mecca of cuban food. but if you’re anything like us, the limited number of cuban eateries in town has never stopped the craving for a killer cuban sandwich from popping up.
if you’ve never had a cuban sandwich…it’s time to rectify that.
