when you run a deli restaurant in a busy neighborhood like university heights, you don’t have a ton of time to reflect. but every now and again, something happens that causes you to stop and take a look around.

for us at bfd, it was our four-year anniversary that made us go, “has it really been four years already? it feels more like two!”

that got us thinking about how much we love it in university heights, how grateful we are to be an institution in the neighborhood, and how many great things have happened in four quick years.
take a look below at our top four moments in bfd history (and then stick around for a bonus top 4 list of things you may not know about us.)

top 4 moments in bfd history

  1. opening day. of course.
  2. when we got our first silver fork award for being one of the best restaurants in san diego.  san diego home and garden referred to us a “a bit of brooklyn in university heights,” and our hearts swooned. that’s exactly what we’re going for, and the recognition was pretty damn awesome.
  3. the first time the university heights community association included us as one of the four stops on the holiday caroling tour. we had been here about three years, so that was a big deal to us. we served hot chocolate and did our happy dance because that’s when we knew we had officially secured our place in the neighborhood.
  4. our fourth anniversary. because looking back from where we stand right now, we’re in awe of all that’s taken place. all the faces, all the regulars, all the friends we’ve made over the past four years – it’s been so rad, and it’s still rad.

4 things you may not know about us (just in case you’re curious)

  1. our names are sheep and laura.
  2. we’ve been together for 16 years and married for 11, and we still like each other after working together every day for the past 4 years at bfd. (yeah, we know, that’s kinda like 3 things in one.)
  3. sheep does a sunday night radio show on 94.9 (from 10 to midnight).
  4. laura can fit her whole hand in her mouth.

but seriously, we’re grateful to be a part of the university heights community

we’re grateful to be in such good company with sprouts, walter todd salon and spa, san diego unified school district, the university heights community association, frock you vintage, and all the other great businesses in the area.

we’re also grateful to be part of your routine. we see a lot of you two and three times per week. the more often you stop by and grab a sandwich from us, the more we feel like we’ll fulfilling our greater purpose of feeding awesome people awesome food.

so, thanks for being an important part of our world. we’re thrilled to be a part of yours.
