comic-con is great. we love it. we do. but if you never leave the area around the convention center, can you really say you visited san diego? we say no.

of course, you don’t want to venture too far away from all of the comic-con hubbub, but between events you’ll need to eat, right?  why not use your mealtimes as an excuse to get out and see more of san diego?

the following eateries are all a quick uber-ride away from the convention center, and they’re located in some of the coolest parts of town. take a look below at these 7 places to eat when visiting san diego during comic-con.

the mission - breakfast in the east village

every mission lover swears by their favorite menu item. ours is the mission french toast: fresh baked cinnamon bread on a palette of berry puree. sigh. is it breakfast time yet?

big front door - lunch in university  heights

give yourself a couple of hours to wander around the neighborhoods of university heights, hillcrest, and north park. then stop by and have lunch with us at bfd. try our wasabi beef sandwich, the duck cranberry salad, or any of our other delectable menu items. you can eat inside, outside, or take your food down the road to balboa park to eat under a tree. that would be so san diego of you.

carnitas snack shack - snack-time on the embarcadero

sure, you can pay a billion dollars to dine at any number of fancy restaurants all over san diego, but why bother when you can get fast-casual, pork-centric snacks and craft beer right on the embarcadero? just sayin’.

prep kitchen - happy hour in little italy

what goes better with handcrafted cocktails than a cutting board piled high with house cured meats and cheeses? maybe a plate of bacon wrapped dates? or how about some marinated olives? prep kitchen is one of our favorite places to go when we want more than a snack but less than a meal.

saiko sushi - more happy hour in north park – and then maybe some dinner

one of san diego's go-to choices for classic japanese dishes like nigiri and tonkatsu. saiko sushi is also home to an unbeatable happy hour with sake and beer chasers along with as much happy hour menu sushi you can eat! make sure you also try their renegade roll and house edamame.

eclipse chocolate - dessert in south park

seven words, one dessert: chile burnt caramel cinnaroll buttermilk bread pudding. there is nothing more to say.

la puerta - late late happy hour in the gaslamp

at la puerta, the kitchen doesn’t close until 1:00 am, so you can eat their tasty mexican food late into the night. they also have a second happy hour from 10:00 pm to closing, so after a long day at comic-con, you can take pleasure in $5 appetizers and $5 frozen mojitos.

here’s to another fun comic-con weekend!

once you’ve dined in all of the above restaurants, you can officially say you’ve visited san diego, even if you spent all the rest of your time in your costume at the convention center.
