there’s a reason wine and cheese events are still so popular despite veering so close to cliché. when two unique, complex tastes come together, magic happens. the same magic applies to other beverage and food combinations, and now that san diego is teeming with award-winning microbreweries, it’s only fitting to pair local brews with local foods—in our case, sandwiches.

want to wow a date or a colleague with recommendations for killer flavor combinations? start with our guide to perfectly pairing deli sandwiches and craft beer.

smokey the meatloaf & fall brewing’s “magical & delicious” pale ale

our classic meatloaf sandwich requires a refreshing finish in an accompanying beverage.
the aromatics from layered hop varietals in this pale ale from fall brewing hits the spot. it’s on the hoppy end of the spectrum, so it can hold its own against a hearty slab of meat.

baby back ribs & coronado brewing company's “nuttin butta” porter

sometimes strong flavors need a beverage that will complement their potency. our baby back rib sandwich (slathered in house barbecue sauce and topped with oven-roasted onion and shredded cabbage on a torpedo roll) pairs perfectly with the smooth, chocolaty profile of coronado brewing company’s nuttin butta porter.

cali cubano & stone cali-belgique ipa

powerful sandwich seasonings call for a pungent beer to match. we love pairing our famous cali cubano sandwich (house cured and smoked pork loin, jack cheese, pickle, red onion, avocado, mustard and jalapeno aioli) with stone brewing’s california-inspired cali-belgique ipa, which the brewery calls “an otherwise identical twin to stone ipa that was raised in a belgian culture.”

b.g.p. & alesmith old numbskull

not many brews can stand up to bold beef flavors, but intense, boozy barleywine does the trick—especially when accompanied by spicy vegetables. our b.g.p. roast beef sandwich (with house smoked gouda, pepperoncini, and chipotle aioli) pairs deliciously with old numbskull’s rich malty flavors of caramel and toffee.

hoisin-ginger pulled pork & mission hefeweizen

the vibrant freshness of carrot, cabbage, cilantro, scallion and hoisin-ginger sauce of our bahn-mi inspired sandwich demands a lighter, fruity counterpart in a paired beer. mission’s bavarian-style hefeweizen, with hints of banana, clove and pear, draws out the natural sweetness of the carrots and ginger.

turkey day & coronado brewing punk’in drublic

it doesn’t take a beer genius to know that a thanksgiving-inspired sandwich should be paired with a pumpkin flavored beer, but coronado brewing takes it one step further. they use actual pumpkin puree in their seasonal pumpkin ale (one pound per barrel). plus, the high alcohol content adds a warming complexity to the spice blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, which goes down smooth with our turkey day sandwich.

try our pairings—or create your own

we stand behind our pairing ideas, but we welcome you to try your own with the selection of local brews in our in-house beer and wine shop. and if you’re feeling fancy, try pairing our sandwiches with our wine selections. we’d love to hear your mouthwatering success stories.
