public interest in great food-and-drink pairings has expanded far beyond wine and cheese in the last few years, and we’re all for it. who doesn’t love wine and chocolate or craft beer and artisan cheese?

that said, here a question for you:

who says notable pairings have to involve food and beverages? why can’t you pair food with food?

well, you can. so we did. we’ve matched our delicious deli sandwiches with the perfect dessert accompaniments. of course, these are just suggestions, so if your taste buds demand something other than the combos listed below, feel free to improvise.

turkey & cheddar mousse sandwich + chocolate chip cookie

chocolate chip cookies are an american classic. another american classic: the turkey sandwich. our version might have a modern twist with smoked cheddar mousse, arugula, tomato, red onion, aioli, and sun dried tomato vinaigrette on whole grain bread, but classic tastes are classic forever, so give this pairing a try.

caprese sandwich + oatmeal rum raisin cookie

oatmeal makes for a stouter cookie than usual, which is why it pairs wonderfully with a sandwich on the lighter side. plus, the bold flavors of our caprese—buffalo mozzarella, whole basil leaf, roma tomato, pressed garlic, and oil and vinegar on ciabatta bread—provide a great contrast to the sweetness of rum and raisins.

loins of fire sandwich + coconut macaroon

we don’t call it “loins of fire” for nothing—our chili roast pork loin, roast poblano pepper, pickled onion and jalapeno, cilantro, lettuce, fresno chili sauce and garlic aioli on a torpedo roll is deliciously scorching. so cool off your mouth afterward with the creamy taste of coconut in our popular macaroon cookie.

eggplant ball sandwich + chocolate pistachio cookie with salt

of course you’ve heard of meatballs, but we’re pretty sure eggplant balls are new to you—though just as tasty. we smother our eggplant balls in marinara and sprinkle them with parmesan before wrapping it all in a torpedo roll for a modern italian classic that pairs perfectly with a classic italian dessert flavor: pistachio. add chocolate and a dash of salt and you’ll want to belt out a few bars of “that’s amore.”

deep v sandwich + chocolate bomb

unlike vegetarian options at most sandwich shops, we don’t simply remove the meat, add extra lettuce, and call it an adequate alternative. instead, we crafted a hearty vegetarian meal between slices of whole grain bread: smoked potato, avocado whip, roma tomatoes, red onion, pea sprouts, and oil and vinegar. it’s so delicious even carnivores will love it, so reward yourself for venturing into the meat-free universe  by ordering a decidedly decadent dessert afterward—the chocolate bomb. it looks like a simple mini chocolate cake from the outside, but appearances are delightfully deceiving. so go ahead and discover the wonders inside. And hey, you deserve it, whether you opt for the vegetarian sandwich or not!

creativity rules at big front door

at big front door deli in san diego, we’re big fans of gastronomical creativity and innovation, which is why we offer a new “sandwich of the season” every few months. Our current seasonal offering is a roast chicken sandwich with point reyes blue cheese, fresno chili hot sauce, red onion, carrot, cabbage, lettuce and garlic aioli on ciabatta bread. come on in, give it a try, and let us know which dessert you paired it with. but, remember, it won’t be here forever--so stop by today!
